Kim Wise World leading health and rehabilitation specialist: Scientist (Anatomy Major), Registered Physiotherapist, Certified Feldenkrais Practitioner and Movement Intelligence teacher. Effective treatments for people with chronic pain, impeded movement and neurological conditions.
Public workshop on Managing Chronic Pain in Coffs Harbour - Sunday 27 July 2014 In this workshop held during National Pain Week (21-27 July), Kim will explain how Feldenkrais therapy can help alleviate chronic pain. When pain continues for a long time, it is no longer caused simply by injury or damage but our brain still perceives a threat and a need to protect. This results in muscular holding, overly active sympathetic nervous system (fight/flight), chemical response, hypersensitivity, etc. Feldenkrais uses movement in a particular way, to change the protective patterns of the nervous system. Through mindful movement, we can learn to decrease muscle holding, alter our breathing, reduce fear of doing things, change the way we carry out our daily activities, etc. Most importantly, we can develop our awareness of the habits and patterns of behaviour, in our thinking, sensing, moving and emotions, that help to perpetuate the pattern of pain. Through understanding these habits, we can find alternatives that allow us to be more comfortable and to do more of the things we want to do in our lives.
